Mauritian people are very friendly and helpful. If you have a flat tire, you may have about 3 to 4 people ready to help. If you do not buy anything from the local shop, the shopkeeper will still remain friendly, talking about himself, his family and country. Some Mauritians will even invite you for a drink at their house. However, a few rules are to be observed, like anywhere else in the world; here are a few guidelines.
Etiquette
Ladies are not allowed to sunbathe in string or topless on public beaches. Not once will a Mauritian come and mention it, but you need to know that it will come as a shock to them.

Travellers are reminded to dress decently in town. Shorts and mini skirts are not allowed in religious sites. And shoes are to be taken off in temples.

Always ask for permission before you take someone's picture.

Haggle the prices with an itinerant dealer, as they will expect it, and it contributes to the local charm of small shops.

Precautions to take
Always wash your fruits and vegetables beforehand, and do not drink tap water.

Whether driving a car or riding a bicycle, be very careful as Mauritian drivers are very fast on the road.

Like in all countries with massive tourism, you should watch out for all your personal belongings and do not let anything out of your sight; mostly on beaches and in tourist areas.
